Do You Always Wear A Helmet?

n42-52.jpgI think we can all agree on the importance of wearing a helmet while riding.  I must admit it’s something I know I should always do, but don’t.  Although this year I have vowed to wear my helmet each time I get on the bike.  I have worn many different brands of helmet including Shoei, Bell and yesterday I purchased a Nolan. Let me ask you, “Do you always wear a helmet?  What brand do you prefer?”

BMW Wins Off Road

bmw002.jpgBMW the winning motorcycle in major off road rally

Testing their motorcycles in possibly the toughest fashion, two Dutchmen have won a major off road rally riding BMW’s.

The two BMW-riding Dutchmen won the third edition of the Heroes Legend classic off-road rally from Paris to Dakar. Riding for the Bert Duursma Motoren dealership team, Jos Bourgondien and Harrie Jacobi beat all challengers to win this tough ‘rallye-raid’ event that started on 8 March under the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and finished just last weekend at the Lac Rose in Dakar, Senegal.Organized by former BMW factory rider and two-times Paris-Dakar Rally winner Hubert Auriol, the aim of the Heroes Legend is to offer the opportunity to compete in a Paris-Dakar-style rally raid in the best possible conditions, with assistance by a professional, experienced team of organizers and the chance to ride more than 6,500 kilometers of roads and desert trails from Paris, France, all the way to Dakar, Senegal. This year, 165 participants in teams of at least three people - of which 68 were on motorcycles and 46 in 4×4 vehicles - crossed France, Spain, Morocco and Mauritania, before arriving on the banks of the famous Lac Rose, close to Dakar.Riding a classic converted 860cc BMW R 65 GS, and a new G 650 Xchallenge with Touratech Dakar kit, Jos Bourgondien and Harrie Jacobi rode close to 7,000 kilometers across tarmac, gravel, dirt, sand and rocks to reach the finish line and claim this important victory for the Bert Duursma team. West Virginia Here I Come!

For three weeks my bride has been in Virginia opening a new office for her company.  She is soon to return, so last night I pulled out my trusty atlas to determine her best route home.  As I began looking at the many unexplored roads in Virginia, and West Virginia, I had the sudden urge to don my riding gear and take off.  (Dream sequence begins here…)  I was touring the twisties through the Alleghenies, in and out of small towns like Mt. Hope, Piney View,  Briar Knob, and Shady Springs.  Stopping for coffee and pie at Sally Mae’s cafe while listening to the locals tell the stories they have told a thousand times before.  My trip was suddenly interrupted by my cell phone ringing but be assured it won’t be long before I am taking this trip.

The Joy Is In The Journey

1438885990_9c5364a544_m.jpgHope all of you are enjoying your Friday. I am getting ready to leave work and head for a ride. Along the journey I will try to find a small, out of the way diner to have a bite to eat. It is amazing how many good eateries there are in places no one has heard of. I am often asked why I like motorcycles so much and my reply is “I don’t”! It’s not the motorcycles as much as the travel and exploration. Perhaps if I had been born in another era I would have sailed the seas and discovered some new land, or perhaps I would have been one of the first to step foot in the wild west as a new country began to stretch her boundaries. But since I was born in the time and place appointed, I ride! Have a great weekend everyone!

Quote of the Week

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. -
