Show Us Your Helmet!

Yesterday the BBC reported that many Nigerian Motorcyclists have been wearing Calabashes (dried pumpkin shells) on their heads in order to circumvent a newly issued helmet law.  While I don’t have any dried pumpkin shells around here, I do have a few helmets; 3 Shoei’s and 2 Nolan’s.

What type of helmet do you PUMPKIN HEADS wear?  Let’s see them!

    My helmet of choice is a Nolan flip-face. I think it’s a N102. I have a big head and this was one of the few full-face helmets that fit well. I liked the external tinted sunshield as I don’t like to wear sunglasses. The drawback to this system is that the external shield is usually coated with deceased insects by the time I get around to using it.

    The new model has an internal sun visor, which I would love to try. I just don’t feel like dropping another $325 for a helmet I don’t desperately need.

    I was wearing a Nolan (since replaced) when I got slammed by a left turning mini-van last year. My head hit the hood of the vehicle and the helmet took the shot without cracking. No cranial injuries.

    My only criticism of these fine helmets is their finish, which is very fragile and will sustain nicks from stones, gravel, other particulate in the air, and even insects.

    PS: NPR reported yesterday that members of the US Congress have been using hollowed out pumpkins as heads, which were instrumental in putting together the provisions for the $350 billion TARP bailout to AIG and the banks.

    Damn! Milk came out my nose. I ride with a KBC, by the way, a full-face. No bells, no whistles to be found anywhere in it.
