Saddle Sore 1000: Begins Saturday Morning

Early Saturday morning I will leave Springfield, to begin my Saddle Sore 1000 ride.  The “Saddle Sore”, is the entry level ride sponsored by the world famous, Iron Butt Association, and consists of riding a minimum of 1000 miles in a 24 hour period.  A rider needs witnesses for both the beginning and the end of the trip, as well as other time stamped documentation.  These records are then submitted to the IBA for an investigation.  Once verified, the ride will be sanctioned by the IBA.

The route I have chosen will take me west on Interstate 70, through Indianapolis, Indiana, St. Louis, Missouri, and just east of Kansas City.   I will stop at a small town; Boonville, Missouri, which is 516 miles from my starting point, and my halfway destination.  Here I will fuel, document my stop, and head back toward Springfield.

Several of our readers have already completed this ride, and I thank you for your advice.

I will be updated my progress in real time on Facebook. If you care to follow.

1982 Yamaha Seca 650

yamaha-650.jpg

While riding home from dinner this evening, I passed a motorcycle parked in a front yard with a “For Sale” sign on it.  I have been looking for another around town rider, so I decided to stop.  The bike was 1982 Yamaha Seca 650, and with in minutes of my arrival the owner came out and briefed me on this motorcycle’s history.  Seems he is the Yamaha’s second owner and has the owners manual, the original tool kit, the windshield, as well as some service records.  The Seca has 30,000 miles on it and at a cursory glance is in fairly good condition.  I will do a little research on it tomorrow and who knows, may have another ride in the stable by days end.  Any wisdom?

Mild Hogs Update: Trouble in Paradise..

The “Mild Hogs” are now down to 2, and one of them, just lost a clutch.  Moments ago I spoke with John Chambers, the brain trust (scary) behind a five week motorcycle trip through the west.  Three of the original five, have had to turn back for various reasons, and Dan, the lone Triumph rider, has lost a clutch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

John said despite a couple of set backs, the trip has been a good one, and the scenery has been absolutely breathtaking.  John also bragged the posse has yet to be rained on.  Highlight’s of the trip include riding through the Napa Valley, and along the Oregon coast.  They are set to arrive in Sturgis on Sunday.

AMA Vintage Days

On Sunday I spent the day at the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, in Lexington, Ohio.  Vintage Days, is America’s grandest celebration of motorcycling heritage, with national championship vintage racing, the world’s largest motorcycle swap meet, new bike demo rides, seminars, classic bike shows, and new product vendors.  BSA motorcycles was the Marque of the Year and Hall of Famer Don Emde, was the Grand Marshal. This is the 18th year of the event and the 15 year at the world renown Mid-Ohio Race track.

A gorgeous blue sky was the back drop as the boys and I, made our way  to the Mid-Ohio race track early Sunday morning.  Entering gate 3, we were soon parked next to a Matchless, a Vincent, a Motto Guzzi,  a Laverda, a BSA,  an Aprilia, and a Triumph.  Not bad company.

The trip to Mid-Ohio was especially exciting this year as my sons were making their initial journey to this Mecca of motorcycles.  I was anxious for them to see the motorcycles many guys their age have never heard of, or perhaps only seen in books.  I wanted them to rub shoulders with other men and women who are passionate about these old steeds, and thereby gain a healthy respect for both the new and the old.

We strolled the amazing grounds of Mid-Ohio, and viewed some wonderful old machines.  We spent a couple of hours walking around the world’s largest motorcycle swap meet looking at parts, wires, gears, rusted frames, and whole bunch of other crap.

By mid afternoon, the sun was beating down, so we positioned ourselves on one of the shaded knolls which surrounds the track and watched some outstanding racing, and may have even dozed off a time or two!

Our experience was greatly enhanced by the many wonderful enthusiast we encountered, one of whom, gave me the quote of the day; “A wet and muddy day at the track, is better than the very best day at work.”

And then a very weary racer, who had just come off the track when I asked him how he did in his heat, his reply:  “Not so well, I did pass a couple other bikes… (sheepishly) but they weren’t in my class!”  Good for you my man!

I even met up with fellow blogger and BMW enthusiast, Jacqui Van Ham.  We hope to do a project together in the very near future.

Attendance figures have not yet been published for the event, but estimates are somewhere near 50,000.  I am not certain of the figures, but I am certain there were 3 guys in attendance who had a fabulous day together, and grew more passionate about motorcycles of all types, especially the vintage ones!

Another KTRSD Bike Night has come and gone, and although the weather wasn’t perfect we had a great time.  There was a nice mix of motorcycles, great food, and Darren did a super job with the music.  Thanks for coming!  Let’s do it a gain next week!

5 Nuggets of Wisdom

tn.jpgI enjoy collecting pithy statements of truth, insight, and bull crap.  Here’s 5 more nuggets of wisdom that will enable you to go far in this life!  If I remember the originator I will acknowledge them, if not, just pretend my little brain thought them up.

 1.  “Be polite to everyone you meet, but have a plan to kill everyone you meet.”

2.  “Never do less than 40 miles before breakfast.”

3.  “If you can’t get it going with bungee cords, wire, and electrician’s tape, it’s serious!”

4.  “Sometimes the only way out is through.”

5.  “If you think everything is under control, you’re not going fast enough.”  Mario Andretti
