Breakfast With The “Mild Hogs”

Early Tuesday morning I was graced with an opportunity to see several riding buddies off as they embarked on a journey of a lifetime. Several months ago these “Mild Hogs” began talking about taking a five week trip out west to explore the beautiful country of Colorado, Nevada, California, Oregon, The Dakota’s, and all places in between. Their attitude reminded me of a line from the 2007 movie, Wild Hogs, when John Travolta’s character, Woody, said; “A road trip: just us, the wind, the road to the Pacific. If not now, when?”

This group of motorcycle enthusiasts is made up of five, fairly normal guys. Their fun loving and adventurous spirits make them a delight to be around, and often gets them into a little trouble, as I am certain their wives would attest. Here they are…

The morning send off was held at Castle’s Country Restaurant, just outside the small town of Westville, and the mood inside the diner was one of anticipation, and raucousness. At one point Dan, pretending to take a call from his wife, ended the phony conversation by saying he would talk to her in 5 weeks then proceeded to snap his phone in half! Everyone was stunned! Of course it was all a ruse and we had a great laugh.

After a hearty breakfast of eggs, and sausage gravy, and some even heartier farewells, this band of brothers headed west to live out their dreams. See you in five weeks my friends!

    I have to agree with Dean… I’m very envious too. I can’t even imagine how fun it would be to take off for five weeks on the motorcycle! I hope your pals have a wonderful time! Maybe they will even share some of their (sharable!) road stories with you. Let them know your inquiring “fans” would love to hear about it.

    BTW… there’s hope for ya after all. Looks like you have some very classy friends with great taste in bikes! LOL! ;}

    Hey Rick,

    Your article about our friends the “Mild Hogs” is great. I’m glad you and I could be there to see them off. I understand they may make us even more jealous, in that they’ve been talking of making this a six week trip instead of five. I know they’re gonna’ have a great time and I know you’ll do a good job of reporting what they send to you. I can’t wait to hear Dan tell of his first view of the Grand Canyon and his first visit to Sturgis. Since his is the only Triumph among those Hogs, I expect a lot of people will gather around him when they stop. If my health and finances would have permitted me to go with them, Carol would have looked like the Road Runner packing my gear. Now, back to the mundane and ordinary. Wish me luck and success in adjusting my primary chain again.

    I have to say I envy your friends. I would love to take off on a 5-week adventure on the bike! Maybe someday.

    Here’s to a safe and exciting journey to Dan, Jim, John, Ed and John.
