Ethan Hit A Chicken!

Sunday presented me with a rare opportunity.  Both of my sons were home from college and as such, we were able to share the day riding together.

We geared up and departed the house around noon, spending the better part of the day racing up and down the winding roads of northeast Clark County.  The skies were overcast, with gusty winds, so gusty in fact, maintaining lane positon was often difficult to achieve.

We enjoyed the landscape now at rest, and rode through many small villages and sleepy bergs.  Upon leaving one small town, we encountered seven or eight chickens happily pecking on the left side of the road, at least that’s what they were doing until we approached them.  The sounds of the motorcycles frightened the fowl. Deciding it was time to return to the safety of the barnyard they ran across the road, directly in front of us.  I was leading, and managed to escape them, Ethan, riding second, and was not so fortunate.  Yes, Ethan hit a chicken!  Fortunately, the bird wasn’t injured, and after a brief period of confusion  headed on to safety.  “Damn there goes dinner,” I thought.

As darkness approached, we headed home to a pot of homemade vegtable soup, crusty bread, and a roaring fire.  We spent the evening enjoying one another’s company, swapping stories about the ride, content in now knowing ”Why the chicken crossed the road.”

As my sons continue to grow older, and establish their own lives, these rare opportunities of riding together become more and more valuable to me.  It was a great day.

The Generous Motorcyclist

Sunday mornings always seem to bring out the contemplative side of me.  Yes, I have one of those!  It is most often on Sunday mornings that  I think about the blessings in my life, how I am spending my time, and what I am doing for others.  I know most of you have thoughts like that as well because motorcyclist’s are some of the most charitable people in all of the world.

The two wheeled community regularly organizes charity rides for every cause imaginable.  If you desire to have a charity ride you are organizing, or participating in, advertised.  Check out Bikers Charities.

A Cold Ride is…

Early this morning I spoke with Chesshirecat via Twitter about gearing up for cold weather riding.  We both agreed that cold weather “Sucks”,  and that we would prefer temperatures in the 70’s year round.  But since neither of can change the seasons, our only alternative is to bundle up.  We also agreed that a bundled up ride is better than no ride at all.  Wouldn’t you concur?

Makin’ Mama Happy

garage_full_of_junk.jpg

With cold weather predicted for later this week,  I will spend this Sunday preparing my single car garage to receive my wife’s vehicle, and two of my motorcycles.  Five years ago I moved into a home built in 1907, and although the house has more than enough space, the garage it seems, was an afterthought.  For three seasons of the year our tiny garage is crammed full of motorcycles and accessories that go along with them, but winter is another story.  You see, as the cold winds of winter begin to howl, my wife insists her primary car is the one that gets the garage.  So today will be spent trying to make mama happy.  The other bikes will be moved to storage where they will hibernate, and dream of  rides yet to come.  Have a great Sunday!

2 Tips For Writing Ride Reports

1.  Don’t write it.  No one cares!

2.  Don’t have just one tip.

I am as guilty as the next person when it comes to thinking someone may be remotely interested in my trip.  Believe me they aren’t!  All of us have seen trees, rocks, bushy tailed squirrels, and twisty roads.  We know what freshly cut grass smells like.  We have felt the wind in our hair, and the occasional bumble bee in our pants (OK, maybe not all of us).  I am glad you had the most sensational ride of your life, I really am, I just don’t want to read about it and I am not alone.

No, I am not trying to mean, and I don’t hate my life.  I am simply a friend trying to save you a little time.  Go ride!

An Ass on A BMW

Here at KTRSD, I give the Harley riders quite a bit of grief.  I joke about the

  • oil leaks
  • the Halloweeen outfits
  • the herd mentality

Well here’s what a couple of them, OK, all of them think of me.  And you know, I think they got it right this time.
