Bike night at Jackass Flats.

Jackass Flats holds one of the largest weekly bike nights in the country.  On any given Wednesday you may see nine hundred to several thousand bikes roll on to the sprawling grounds, it’s quite a site to behold.

Once parked I usually light up a cigar and leisurely stroll up and down the rows looking at the motorcycles.  The majority of the bikes are Harley Davidson’s, although in the past couple of years there has been a noticeable increase in sport bikes and some old school stuff.  I find this trend very refreshing.

After looking through half of the rows of chrome and skulls, my BMW brain needs a break, so I head over to the vendors aisle to peruse the latest high tech gizmo’s, try on some new shades, look at the colorful patches, or pick over some dew rags.  I do this every time I am there, but as I think about it; I have never purchased anything (you know what they say about BMW bikes; “the cheapest thing on them is the rider!”).  After twenty minutes or so, I am ready to resume my sight seeing tour of the remainder of the machines.

Visiting the “Flats” is a nice way to spend a Wednesday night, so if you happen to be in the area on hot and muggy, summer evening, let me know, I will be happy to give you a cigar and show you around.

Is Myrtle Beach Bike Week A Thing of the Past?

Myrtle Beach ordinances designed to drive off rallying bikers seem to be having the intended effect.

Just 75 vendors have sought permits from Horry County this year so far, down from 146 last year. Some permits are still under consideration or are being held until payment is received, but Horry County spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier told the Sun-News the county does not expect a last minute rush for late permits, which include a 50 percent markup.

The county’s Public Safety Department will not open an operations center during this year’s rally, anticipating smaller crowds than in past years.

Attendance was down significantly last year, but nobody is sure how much of the decline owes to Myrtle Beach’s ordinances and how much to the sour economy.

Several venues that have hosted vendors during past rallies had no permits listed at their addresses by Wednesday afternoon, including the former Irongate Saloon, Biker Design, Inlet Square mall, Hooters and Myrtle Beach Speedway, according to the newspaper.

Hot Rods and Harleys

This afternoon I spent the day at “Hot Rods and Harleys” in downtown Springfield.  The annual bike and hot rod show is sponsored by Mid-Ohio Harley Davidson and was a great way to spend a late summer day.  I enjoyed seeing old friends,  listening to the live bands, eating, and basically just hanging out.  Click here to see a few photos of the day.

3 Ways to Enjoy Jackass Flats

Wednesday Jackass Flats kicked off their 2009 “Bike Night” in a huge way!  An anticipated a crowd of 6,000 showed up to enjoy music, food, bikes, beer, and perfect weather.  If you have never been to this bar you need to come at least once. Here’s 3 tips to make it more enjoyable.

1.  Come early!

Arriving at 4:30 p.m. will allow you a good parking spot on the black top.  This will be a great vantage point to watch all the bikes roll in a little later in the evening.

Coming early also allows you to sit down in the bar for dinner.  The pizza is great!

2.  Sight See!

By the time you have finished dinner, the once barren parking lot will be filled with bikes and the large field will be filling up fast.  Walk around and check out the bikes and vendors.

3.  Go back to your bike.

By this time the band is playing, and the bikes are pouring in the front gate.   You don’t want to miss this!  Go back to your bike, relax and enjoy the show!

If you decide to stop by Jackass Flats, let me know and perhaps we can meet up.

Keep the rubber side down!
