I have been thinking about the local teenager(Nick Haney) who died in a motorcycle accident on Sunday. I can’t help but mourn for him and his family who will miss him dearly. Perhaps I am moved by this accident because I saw it, or perhaps it’s because I have 2 boys of a similar age. I guess the reason doesn’t matter. What does matter is a young man has left us too soon! And that makes me very sad.

- I may be buying another bike today. The owner is to bring it by Dealership for me to look at. This would be a great time for such a purchase since my wife is in Virginia for a month.
- Sundays ride was full of lessons for me. Every-time I get on the bike I want to learn something that will make me a better rider, be it mentally or in execution. I will post some of the things I have been learning soon.
- On a recent ride I was decked out in my winter garb, but was still chilled after an hour or so. Perhaps it is time to invest in the ole’ heated vest, pants, and gloves. With Spring here maybe I can catch a sale!
- Hey, any advice on a V-Strom for touring?

On the far back row of our car lot sits a 1991 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, the sticker price, a few hundred bucks. The leather seats are cracked, the bumper cover is missing, she has definitely seen better days. And to think only a few years before, the owners of this vehicle were the envy of the neighborhood. They cruised the streets of their town filled with pride as onlookers could only dream of owning a beauty such as this. Yesterday as I showed this jalopy to a young kid, I began to think about the value people place on “things”. I am floored by the amount of effort people will expend in order to have “things“! Many work seven days a week and often two jobs, miss out on the kids play, ball games, or piano recital, all to pay for their “things”. Just remember, One day all the “things”, that you are working your ass off to have, will wind up on the far back portion of our lot, in the section we affectionately call; JUNK ROW! Was it worth it? Sermon over.

- The new issue of “rider” came last night. You can’t believe how exciting that was!
- I’ll wager the biker chick leaves American Idol tonight.
- William F. Buckley died yesterday. A sad day for the conservative movement. I actually loved listening to the guy, but he was often very difficult to understand.
- I found a new Pub. It has over 10,000 different types of beers. OK, maybe 74!

I need to become a weather forecaster, because the ones in our area are horrible. Maybe I shouldn’t be so hard on the news bunnies, after all they do serve a purpose; they are enjoyable to stare at! Though they certainly cannot track weather systems. Our 5″ of snow turned out to be rain, and only small amounts of that! (I know! I’m a sexist!)
Lately, I have been perusing the various accessory and parts magazines, and once again have become dissatisfied with my Aero (At least they do their job). Here’s a few things I am considering…
1. Adding a light bar.
2. Replacing the current windshield.
3. New paint.
4. Adding a backrest for my seat.
Is there anything you are wanting to change, or add to your motorcycle?

Big Kids with Big Toys getting to blow stuff up! Seriously, how cool is that!
You are hard core if…
- Your best shoes have steel toes!
- You have rebuilt your motorcycle in the middle of your living room.
- You can tell what kind of bugs they are by the taste of them.
- You have ever started a bar-b-que with a welding torch.
- You have ever done a doughnut in the parking lot after church.
- Your ash trays are all bike pistons!
- You have a party and more bikes show up than cars.
- Any day you ride is a good day!
- Your heart is as big as a gas tank and you know it is your responsibility to ride safe, not the other guys.
- Your best friends are all named after animals.

“I barely recogonized the guy”! A few days ago I ran into someone I hadn’t seen for several years and to be kind, all I will say is he didn’t wear those years well. Later, while sipping a steamy cup of joe, I began to muse how quickly time passes. Here’s a list of things that seemed to bring that point home to me…
- I am now 47! Where did my 20’s go?
- My babies are 18, and 21 years old.
- Michelle’s new car has 90,000 miles on it.
- My favorite golfers have retired from the Senior Tour.
- I now like tools! I even have a special place for each one of them on the peg board over my work bench.
- My dad has died, and my mom is so much smaller than I remember.
“Where has the time gone?”

Keep The Rubber Side Down!

Coffee dear? This morning my wife and I, had a quiet chat about our resolutions for 2008. I have been thinking about this for sometime, but can’t quite articulate them as of yet. Part of the reason for that, is my family is in a time of transition. My youngest son will have his 18th birthday, graduate from high school, and head off to college, all before June. My oldest son, will be a Junior in college, and most likely be moving into his own place on campus. Leaving Michelle and I, to become the proverbial “empty nester’s”. I am not complaining, mind you. They are great young men and are excited to move into this new phase of their lives. We are proud and anxious for them to experience all that life has to offer. We are just as excited to see how our new life will unfold, the places we will see and the new people we will meet. No one really knows how things will turn out; but at least for now, we are enjoying the ride!
Keep the rubber side down!

Some of the worst traffic I have encountered to date, was rush hour traffic in downtown Chicago. Commuters anxious to get home, delivery drivers hurrying to drop off their last package, and little ole’ me on my motorcycle, sucking fumes! I say; “worst traffic to date”, because my wife is dragging me to the mall in a few minutes! It is Sunday, Dec. 23, and I have to go to the damn mall! So if you are out and about, look over at the benches, I will be sitting with all of the other sorry saps! Wish me luck!
It is hard to imagine Christmas is less than a week away! I have been so focused on work I haven’t given a moment of thought about the season. I know, life is too short to think about work all of the time, but I can’t seem to help myself. Yet starting today, I vow to relax, take a deep breath, and begin to ponder the true reason I celebrate this Holiday in the first place. Care to join me?
