I Am A Guy! What Can I Say!

It seems myself, and every other male motorcycle blogger on the planet, posted Marissa Miller and the Harley V-Rod video yesterday.  What can I say?  To my fellow women bloggers all I can say is, I was low on posting material or I never in a million years, would have stooped so low.  She meant nothing to me!  Really!  :)

“What is wrong with you”?  Was the consensus from most cagers who saw me riding in the cold rain, yesterday. Here’s a few stops I made…

1.  Estelle’s Leather (don’t ask)

2.  The Wharf Cigar Store (picked up my new pipe)

3.  Jeet India  (Curry chicken, Dai Makhni, Dai soup, Choley, and of course Nan,)

Have a great day and be extra careful due to the heavy fog.

2 of My Favorite Things

I am the luckiest guy alive!  On Sunday, I did two of my favorite things in the entire universe;  hang out with my boys, and ride motorcycles.  It was “Family Day” at Findlay University, and with my wife out of town, Jonathan and I, rode our bikes up.  We left Springfield at 9:00 a.m. riding through the thickest fog I have seen since last fall.

We arrived in Findlay around 11:00 a.m. and got Ethan out of bed.  After hanging around the dorm for a while , we headed off  for some lunch, then to take in the newly released film;  “Righteous Kill“, with Al Pacino and Robert De Nero.  (You talkin’ to me?)  Great flick, you have to go see it!

It was good for Jonathan and Ethan, to see each other, they miss one another more than they anticipated.  Around 8:00 p.m. we said our good-byes then headed home!

The two hour ride seemed only a few miles, as I thought about how fast the boys have grown into men , and how proud I am of them both. It was a good day.  It was a really good day!

Where I Live

While wasting time this morning, I began playing around with the google maps. Not that you care, but here’s where I live. How far do I live from you?

Bad-ass Alright!

An iconic looking figure.  A man of tall stature, dressed in black leathers head to toe.  He had the right boots, right bandanna, the right rings.  He struts past me giving me a cold hard stare.  He mounts the chromed out Deuce, she fires with a perfect tone.  He pulls in the clutch, sets her in gear, and slowly pulls away.  Five feet later, he drops her and she slides into the corner of the building.  Bad-ass for sure!

Learning to Shift Gears

A few days ago I read a comment from a new BMW owner discussing a problem he was having shifting; sometimes missing second gear.  Several comments followed in an attempt to help the guy out, but I found one piece of advice particularly interesting to my situation.

The commentator stated that the BMW tranny shifts better when the motor is allowed to rev at it’s highest rpm’s, then shifted.  He stated that there was a unique difference between American riders and their counterparts in Europe when it comes to shifting their motorbikes.  Seems the Europeans practice a late shifting technique allowing the rpm’s to increase to their maximum, then quickly pull the clutch lever in approximately 3/4 of an inch only. While the Americans tend to shift more leisurely, and at lower rpm’s, making way for a less smooth, and under powered transition.

Made sense to me!  So I have been practicing this more aggressive shifting method and find it very much to my liking.  I have been waiting until the last possible moment, then shifting quickly, and with a minimum of clutch movement.  I am shocked by the results!  The RT is shifting much smoother and the power is greater. Now that I am getting the hang of this European shifting, perhaps I should try my hand with tea and crumpets.  Any thoughts?

Routine Maintenance

Hope you have had the time to eat up a little asphalt this week. If not, perhaps over the weekend.  I just reviewed the mileage on my bike,  and it is already time for another oil change.  It seems a if I just changed it, but here we go again. I am pushing almost 9,000 miles for the summer so far, not bad considering how much extra time I have been putting in at work.

I am taking a this weekend off and plan to give the bike a thorough check up…

-go over screws and bolts

-tire wear and pressure

-change the oil

-check bulbs and connections

-clean and re-tighten battery terminals

-inspect brakes

With the rising costs of service at the Dealerships, as well a the length of time they keep the motorcycle. I have opted to perform more of the routine maintenance myself.  In the past I simply sent it out, due the fact I lack patience with that type of work, but hey, as Bob Dillon says;  ”these times; they are a changin!”

Do you do your own maintenence?  Let me know!

Thank You Mr. Kearn

I would like to thank Mr. Walter Kearn for his knowledge, and insight, into the world of motorcycling.  He has produced an excellent dicitonary of cycling terms, and if you get a chance to stop by his sight it is well worth the effort.

Riding Route 66

0628081805.jpgOn Saturday evening my wife and I, attended a wine tasting event sponsored by the Springfield Art’s Festival.  It was a lovely summer night filled with good food, good wine, and good music.  One of the numbers played by the band, Good Vibrations, was “Route 66″, people were singing, dancing, and thoroughly enjoying themselves.  As the song played, I remembered that Riding Route 66 Motorcycle Tour was leaving  to ride the famous Route 66.  The tour was to head out of Chicago on June, 28th, and concludes July, 12th.  I personally think this would be a fantastic way to spend the summer.   I may have to add this to my To Do list.   Is it just me or does anyone else think this would be a great ride?

Thanks!

Thanks to all of you who asked about my son, Jonathan, and his solo ride to Myrtle Beach.  He made the trip without incident, and  has been enjoying his time on the beach.  I really appreciate all of the kind thoughts and prayers.

Happy Father’s Day!

The two greatest days in my life were July 28th,1987, and January 25th, 1990.  It was on these days I became a dad for the first and second time.  I have lived a blessed life, I have been given countless opportunities to do many amazing things, and meet many amazing people, but none of that compares to being Jonathan and Ethan’s father. Thanks Guys!
