ST. GEORGE – Two people were injured in a collision between a motorcycle and a car in Santa Clara on Thursday evening.

The incident, which occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m., involved a black Kawasaki motorcycle and a white Volvo sedan.

Santa Clara-Ivins Police Sgt. Nick Hallman said the motorcycle was the lead motorcycle for a group of three who were traveling together, heading south on Country Lane. Meanwhile, the Volvo was on Hafen Lane, facing west, preparing to turn left onto Country Lane, Hallman said.

“As they approached the intersection of Hafen Lane and Country Lane, the white automobile at the stop sign pulled back in front of them,” Hallman told St. George News at the scene. “The lead bike could not stop in time and hit the front corner panel.”

The rider of the motorcycle, who was wearing a helmet, suffered nose lacerations and other serious facial injuries, Hallman said.

“His face shield, his helmet, it was all smashed and shattered,” Hallman said. “Without this helmet, he would have put his whole head and face in the rear panel of this car, which he hit hard enough to crack the helmet.”

Hallman also mentioned the other safety gear the runner was wearing.

“He had a nice safety vest on him and elbow gloves. Everything you would want a pilot to wear, he had it, and I’m sure that helped a lot in minimizing his injuries.

“She was run over and she was also transported,” Hallman said, adding that the young woman’s injuries appeared to be minor. The passenger, who was also wearing a helmet, was taken to hospital in the same ambulance as the driver.

Meanwhile, the Volvo driver and her passenger were not injured, Hallman said, adding that the circumstances of the crash were still under investigation.

“She may have pulled over at the stop sign, but she says she didn’t see the motorcycles when she got out,” Hallman said of the Volvo driver.

“There isn’t a single brand of brake on each side,” he said, adding: “If he (the rider) did an evasive maneuver, it wasn’t hard enough for him. make him stop. ”

Hallman added that it doesn’t appear that those involved were traveling too fast.

“I think if they had driven at a higher speed, we would have seen more damage, or you would see the brakes locking up, and we don’t see it,” he said. “I don’t think speed was a factor.”

No quotes have been released yet, pending further investigation, Hallman said.

Although a tow truck was called to the scene, it was not needed as the rider’s friends pushed the damaged bike home. The Volvo still seemed operational, despite its broken windshield and dented front panel.

A man accused of intentionally hitting a San Diego police officer with a car in Mira Mesa pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to assaulting a peace officer with a deadly weapon.

Moises Correa faces 35 years in life in prison if convicted because he has previously been convicted of a strike, including a 2011 attempted murder conviction in Maricopa County, Ariz., According to the criminal complaint filed against him.

Correa, 29, is accused of injuring the officer, whose name was not disclosed, shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday after the officer pulled over a black Chrysler sedan that Correa allegedly drove in the area from Black Mountain Road and Westview Parkway.

Police said the Chrysler fled and the officer pursued it. At one point, the driver stopped in a traffic lane and then accelerated in reverse, crashing the car into the motorcycle, according to San Diego Police Lt. Andra Brown.

After impact, the motorist continued to back up, pushing the motorcycle to the ground, with the officer trapped below. The driver, who was accompanied by a female passenger, then fled north on Black Mountain Road, police said.

The patroller, who sustained minor injuries, was treated in hospital and released. He has worked in the Police Department for 13 years and has been assigned to the Motorcycle Unit of the Traffic Division for over five years.

At around 6 p.m. Friday, officers learned that Correa was in the Mira Mesa area, Brown said. A police helicopter spotted Correa and a female companion – police believed she was the passenger in the car involved in the crash a day earlier – in the backyard of a house on Dewsbury Avenue, one little over a mile from where the accident occurred.

The companions entered the house and officers surrounded the residence, Brown said. Other occupants of the house came out and a SWAT team responded to the scene.

After a standoff that lasted several hours, the two suspects found themselves in the attic of the garage. They refused to come out, Brown said.

Police deployed chemical agents in the garage, prompting the couple to surrender. They were taken to the police headquarters for questioning.

Correa was held without bail on Wednesday.

Epps said on his way to Northeast 12th Terrace he saw the Hyundai come to the stop sign, stop briefly, then come forward and hit the motorcycle. He said if the rider hadn’t been hit, he probably would have been.

“She didn’t see me or him,” Epps said.

Friday’s death was the seventh road fatality in Ocala so far this year. At the same time last year, police recorded six road fatalities. For the whole of 2020, the agency investigated 16 fatal traffic accidents.
