Electric scooters are to stay in Cambridge for at least another six months despite concerns about pedestrian safety.
Members of the Combined Authority have approved plans to keep the one-year pilot project – used by 700 people per week – running.
They also voted to roll out the Voi electric bike project across the county and in rural areas following its trial in Cambridge.

The Mayor, Dr Nik Johnson, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said: ‘It is important that we all change the way we think about local transport options and the use of an e-bike and electric scooter could, where appropriate, provide a valuable ultra-low emission alternative for the first and last mile of our journeys.
“As a children’s doctor, I know the effects of air pollution on the health of young people, and I was shocked to see the city of Cambridge giving warnings to people exercising in the city. outdoors due to air pollution levels.
“I am committed to finding solutions that will improve air quality, especially in our cities. And I’m convinced that electric modes of transportation, like e-bikes and electric scooters, are key in our research to not only reduce the impact on our climate, but to improve the health of people living in this region.
“We will of course be looking at concerns raised by public safety concerns and the need for stricter regulations for electric scooters, especially with regard to driving on the pavement, parking and congestion on the streets.”
The electric scooters were launched in Cambridge in October 2020 as part of a 12-month trial. Electric bikes were then added to the service for Cambridge and Peterborough in January this year.
Emerging trends have given the Combined Authority and Voi a better understanding of the habits of scooter and e-bike users. Information gathered showed that the total number of trips made on the 300 active e-bikes alone add up to 65,975 km (that’s the equivalent of traveling between Cambridge and Glasgow over 182 times) helping Cambridge and Peterborough get closer goals of improving air quality through ultra- low emissions and providing a cleaner and healthier environment in which to live and work.

The combined authority acknowledged that the two-wheelers had “raised some expected lessons and challenges, in particular with regard to public safety, driving on the roadway, parking and congestion on the streets”.
However, he was unable to provide the News with a breakdown of the number of collisions that have taken place.
Prior to the approval of the e-bike network extension, an initial calculation of the cost of implementation was made and comparisons were made with similar programs in other regions.
Agents will now work with Cambridgeshire County Council, the Greater Cambridge Partnership, District Councils and local cycling groups to develop the right network to help connect cyclists to travel centers for onward trips and major hubs, providing access to work, social and leisure activities.
