ATLANTA – A man is in hospital and another is in custody after police say one shot the other right outside a busy downtown Atlanta hotel.
Investigators said Tom Regan of Channel 2 they’re still trying to figure out what triggered the incident along a sidewalk near the Hyatt Regency along Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta.
Jennifer Brooks, who lives nearby, said she was upset to learn of the shooting that happened in the middle of the day.
“I was in a building across the street when this happened, and it broke my heart,” Brooks said.
Drena Lee had just arrived at the hotel from Detroit to find the police surrounding her as she was about to check in.
“A little scary?” Regan asked Lee.
“It’s scarier,” Lee said.
She told Regan the lobby was still closed as a precaution.
“Do you still feel comfortable checking in?” Regan asked Lee.
“Not really,” Lee said. “We’ll probably go to another Hyatt in Midtown.”
Police said two men, one walking and one on a scooter, had an argument which turned into a brawl. It was at this point that investigators said the man on the scooter pulled a gun and shot the other man.
The injured are in Grady Memorial Hospital and the police quickly arrested the suspected gunman.
“A few people had an argument, that’s what I understand, one thing led to another and we took care of it,” said Alan LeBlanc, who owns a restaurant nearby.
LeBlanc told Regan he wasn’t too upset by the shooting in front of his restaurant. He said business was returning after last year’s COVID-19 shutdown and gun violence was not confined to the city center.
“Look at Buckhead today. I’d rather be downtown than Buckhead, ”said LeBlanc.
Police told Regan the victim was shot in the hip and was in stable condition. What sparked the confrontation remains unclear.
