Horwin’s EK3 crushes electric moped competition with motorcycle-infused electric vehicle

Now the way I encountered this company may surprise you. I was walking around my neighborhood and passed a building with a sign saying SmartBalance. One thing I noticed when seeing the EK3 was that it uses a chain drive, center mounted motor, like you find on motorcycles. With all the torque available the moment you twist the throttle, you can feel the “motorcycle enthusiast” playing.

The EK3 uses a 72-volt, 10.44 Wh battery from Samsung, which can be easily removed for off-site charging. If you think one battery isn’t enough, throw in another and double your range to 200 km (124 mi). Once discharged, each battery will take up to four hours to recharge.

The brakes use CBS hydraulic technology, distributing the braking force between the front and rear disc brakes, meaning you’ll stop as quickly and safely as possible. As for the suspension, four shock absorbers take care of the vibrations and shocks that you will encounter.

Created as a vehicle designed for city commuting, the EK3 includes a few other features intended to make it both stylish and functional. The inclusion of LED headlights, taillights and turn signals, an anti-theft alarm system and a nifty USB port to charge your device, shows you why this vehicle received the Red Dot.

A large screen makes everything easy to read and displays rider information such as battery level, speed, gear, range and trip time. Oh, there’s also a feature that lets you start the engine just by swiping your finger across the bottom of the screen.

So how much is this beast going to cost you? Well, it all depends on the dealer you use to get one. SmartBalance has them available for 21,619 RON ($ 5,207 at current exchange rates). However, I bet you can convince someone to give you a better deal. If you fancy adding accessories like a windshield, smartphone holder, or motor housing, bring extra.

One thing’s for sure, with a price tag of nearly $ 5,000, speed and torque to satisfy any urban commuter, and a sleek, modern look, the EK3 is an electric vehicle you should consider if you’re looking to let the old ICE behind you.
