According to Foot Mercato, Newcastle would be interested in signing Matteo Guendouzi, currently on loan to Marseille by Arsenal.
What is the story?
Well, Newcastle are no strangers to signing French players, as seen in previous captures of Yohan Cabaye, Moussa Sissoko and Hatem Ben Arfa.
Now the Magpies could be set to bring another one to St James’ Park.
Guendouzi is technically owned by Arsenal, although Foot Mercato believe he could sign for Marseille permanently as they negotiated a € 11million (£ 9million) call option in the loan deal.
In our opinion he is likely to be activated as the man signed by Unai Emery for £ 8million is shining in Ligue 1.
Guendouzi has scored three goals while providing three assists in 12 Ligue 1 appearances this season, as he begins to grow taller.
Foot Mercato believe Newcastle have added him to their list of targets for the summer rather than January.
Should Newcastle sign Matteo Guendouzi?
In our opinion, that would be a smart signing from Newcastle.
Guendouzi is a huge prospect, and has already amassed 57 Premier League appearances at the age of 22.
Certainly, his temper is cause for concern, as he and Mikel Arteta fell out following an unruly performance against Brighton (Football London).
However, he seems to be shaking off those demons in France, which is certainly encouraging to see.
Guendouzi would bring a lot of composure to the Newcastle midfielder.
He’s a tempo-setting midfielder who’s brave enough to receive the ball under pressure and get his team up on the pitch.
If Amanda Staveley and the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) can get this deal done, they deserve a pat on the back.
