A man suspected of shooting a woman and her young son outside their home in northwestern DC was arrested Thursday in Virginia, the DC police chief said.
Anthony Bedney, 26, of Northwest DC, was arrested by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. He was charged with assault with intent to kill and possession of a firearm in a violent crime.
“We are grateful. We informed the family of his arrest, ”said Metropolitan Police Department chief Robert Contee.
The slain woman’s husband and the child’s father thanked the police and called for action to end the gun violence.
“I hope our country flooded with guns and hate will do what is necessary to protect our most vulnerable, even if it is difficult,” he said in a statement.
A family of four were on the sidewalk outside their home on 10th Street NW near Logan Circle on the night of May 18 when Bedney got on a scooter, police said. After an argument over the scooter, he opened fire, seriously injuring the mother and a child, police said.
The child’s father and brother were nearby.
The police chief said on Thursday the injured child was no longer hospitalized. Her mother is still hospitalized but her condition has improved.
Contee and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser both responded to the shooting scene and expressed outrage at more senseless gun violence.
Here is the full family statement:
“We are extremely grateful to the Metropolitan Police Department for their hard work and to everyone who contributed to the investigation and research.
We are overwhelmed and grateful for all the support and prayers. As my wife and son recover, we continue to seek privacy as we do the hard work of healing as a family.
Gun violence is rampant in too many of our communities. I don’t wish anyone what happened to my family, but in our country, I know it will inevitably be the case. I hope our lawmakers can come together to stop this. I hope our communities can come together to tell people with guns who wish to harm others that this is unacceptable and that they will be arrested. And I hope that our country flooded with weapons and hatred will do what is necessary to protect our most vulnerable, even if it is difficult. “
