Vancouver-based national telecommunications company Telus has filed an application with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to add credit card processing fees to customer bills later this year.
According to a document filed with the CRTC on August 8, 2022, Telus wants the fee to apply to new and existing customers who make credit card payments for Telus services. The fee would be set at 1.5% of the payment amount plus applicable taxes.
In an example based on a customer from Alberta, Telus indicates that a $100 invoice with $5 GST would include a processing fee of $1.58 and an additional $0.08 GST on those charges, for a total final bill of $106.66.
Telus is launching a class action lawsuit in 2018 that resulted in Visa and Mastercard agreeing to change their no-surcharge rules. Both companies previously included clauses in merchant agreements that prevented them from adding surcharges to cover the cost of transaction fees, which The Globe and Mail explains are used to fund loyalty programs and reward points.
The rule change will take effect from October 6 — Telus has requested that its new credit card processing fees take effect on October 17, 2022. In addition, Telus says it plans to provide “advance notice” to customers from mid-August.
Those who pay their cell phone bill with a credit card might consider switching to another payment method if they want to avoid paying additional charges, assuming the CRTC approves the request.

Update 08/12/2022 4:26 PM ET: Here’s a fun fact about CRTC filings: you can comment on them. Yes you! The CRTC’s website, while frankly difficult to navigate, allows Canadians to comment on public issues, by either sharing a comment that will be placed on the public record or an opposition/support to an application.
Telus credit card processing fees have apparently garnered more comments than usual — if you would like to lend your voice, you can do so by clicking this link and then clicking the blue “Submit” button next to the Telus Credit Card Processing Fee entry (it should be at the top, but if you can’t find it, press ‘Ctrl+F’ to find the page and type ‘credit card’).
